Angling

If guests have a passion for angling they will be happy to know that Wild Mahseer is situated in an excellent location for this sport. It is only a few minutes drive from the Jia Bhoroli, home to the tiger of Himalayan rivers, the golden mahseer. The mahseer (after which our property is named) is one of the most ferocious game fish in the world and can reach up to 2.7 m in length. When hooked it surely puts up an epic battle!

Fish Sign

The sport of angling was pioneered in the early days by the rugged breed of planters from yesteryear and at Wild Mahseer we have a collection of old photos documenting some of the big catches made on the local rivers as well as historical fishing records for you to peruse. Angling has now become such a popular sport that an annual competition is held on the Jia Bhoroli River every November when a number of keen fishermen from outside the state as well as from abroad participate. The Assam Bhoroli Anglers’ Association organises this event in conjunction with the State Forest Department.

Permits are required to fish in Assam and these should be obtained from the Anglers Association in guests' home country before departure.

Fishing Gear

If guests notify us by e-mail prior to arrival we can arrange for the forest authorities of the Nameri National Park (through which the Jia Bhoroli River runs) to take them to places where they can experience both fast and still water angling. Also, given sufficient notice, planter friends who share a passion for fishing would be only too happy to introduce visitors to some of their favourite fishing spots on the Boroi, the Dikal and the Subansiri Rivers.

At Wild Mahseer we keep some of the best quality angling gear in Past Times, our study and library. Guests may borrow this equipment free of charge.

Please note there is no angling during the summer monsoon season from May to October as the rivers are too big, too fast and too muddy for the fish to see the lures.
