Dolphin Watching on the Brahmaputra River

A wonderful way to spend a day is to take an outing on a traditional wooden riverboat and go spotting endangered freshwater gangetic dolphins, reputed to have the most powerful sonic sense among all species in the world.

After a short drive through scenic, rural Assam to the outskirts of Tezpur, the first stop on the itinerary is the inner sanctum of the ancient Hindu Holeshwar Temple (optional).

Guests are then chauffeured to the bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River where they witness the grandeur of the Kolia Bhomora bridge connecting Tezpur on the north bank with Nagaon on the south bank. It stretches nearly 4 km across making it one of the longest bridges in India.

Dolphin Watching

At Brahmaputra Ghat guests descend down the sandy bank to the river’s edge and clamber onto an open country boat for a peaceful cruise down the river. At some point almost everyone will see the dolphins frolicking and feeding in the river, as well as many different species of birds.

After mooring at a sandbar, “Boatman’s Island”, guests can explore while the boat crew, made up of local fishermen, put together a scrumptious open-air lunch. It is fun to watch as they prepare fresh salad and cook up a variety of mouthwatering fish and vegetable curries over a driftwood fire that permeates the food with a delicious smoky flavour.

Then, as the sun begins to set, the boat returns to the Ghat from where guests are driven to visit Agni Garh (optional). Located on a hillock and the site of a famous historic battle described in the Mahabharata it is a perfect place to enjoy the stunning panoramic view of Tezpur and the Brahmaputra at sunset.

Then there’s another optional visit to Sri Mahabhairab Mandir Temple for arti (evening prayers) before returning to Wild Mahseer for dinner.

Join our ½-day Tezpur Temples activity for a more leisurely visit to Holeshwar Temple, Sri Mahabhairab Mandir Temple and Agni Garh.
